A Godly Mother Who Gave Her Son to the Lord
I Samuel 1:1-11
INTRO: Hannah was a godly mother who gave her son to the Lord God. In I Samuel 1:11, we read these words: "I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life....."
I believe it is the place of mom and dad to dedicate their children unto the Lord.
The family is the first institution God made on the earth.
Parents need to realize that children are not a burden; they are a blessing; they are God’s heritage (Psa 127:1-5). Mom and dad please put God first in your home.
I. I SAMUEL 1:1-11, HANNAH– Woman with a burden and a dream.
A. Hannah had a burden; she was childless. She wanted a child to love, a child to raise for the Lord (vss 1-2, 10).
1. She was mocked by Peninnah (vss 6-7).
2. She was loved yet unfulfilled (vs 8).
B. Hannah had a husband who worshiped God (vs 3).
1. How wonderful it would be if every woman had a godly husband, a husband who put God first, a husband who loved God and worshiped Him.
2. Men, these women need our love and our help. Husbands are to love the Lord, and they are to love their wives (Eph 5:23-25).
a. Be an umbrella of protection for them.
b. Wives, submission is not domination, it is getting under God given authority and protection.
II. I SAMUEL 1:10-17, HANNAH– A WOMAN WHO PRAYED PERSISTENTLY
A. Vs 10, Here we have a woman of prayer trusting in the God of grace. Hannah means "grace."
1. You can be assured that Hannah prayed a long time for a child. She prayed when there seemed to be no answer.
a. Not only did she pray, she cried (vs 10).
b. We need moms who will pray for a child to be born and then pray for that child after it is born.
B. Prayer is very important. We need to be prayer warriors. Ladies, you have a special ministry, the ministry of prayer.
1. Hannah prayed when her spirits were low.
2. She prayed and the tears flowed: "and prayed unto the Lord, and wept sore."
3. Her prayers were fervent and unselfish (vss 11-17).
a. She made a promise to God, a promise she would keep, a promise to give her son to the Lord (vs 11). She did not bargain with God. She proved her love for her Lord by willingly offering her son, her firstborn to the Lord.
b. Eli at first was not very understanding, but then being moved by her prayer he promised her a son (vss 12-17).
III. I SAMUEL 1:18-28, HANNAH– A WOMAN WHO HONORED HER PROMISES
A. Vss 18-19, God answered prayer, and Hannah went from weeping to worshiping.
B. Samuel, meaning "asked of the Lord" was born in answer to prayer.
1. When Samuel was weaned, Hannah took him to the Temple (vs 24a).
a. She came with an offering (vs 24b-25).
b. In vs 26, we see her in the place of worship, the place where she prayed for a child.
c. Vs 27, "For this child I prayed." She prayed in faith believing. Mothers and grandmothers, fathers and grandfathers need to pray for our children and grandchildren (II Tim 1:5).
2. Vs 28, Hannah gave her son Samuel to the Lord for life.
a. Keep your promises to God.
b. Do not forget God. He had been good to you.
IV. I SAMUEL 2:1-10, HANNAH– A WOMAN WHO REJOICED IN GOD
A. Vs 1, Hannah rejoiced in the Lord for His salvation.
B. Vs 2, Hannah rejoiced in the holiness of God.
C. Vss 5-6, Hannah rejoiced in God’s power, in His sovereignty.
D. Vss 7-9, Hannah rejoiced in God’s compassion and His will.
E. Vs 10, Hannah rejoiced in the God of victory.
1. "His king"– Christ!
2. "His anointed" – Christ!
CONCLUSION: Hannah’s burden was for God’s glory!
1. Hannah is an example of a praying, persistent, praising mother.
2. C. H. Spurgeon said: "Prayer and praise are happy companions."
3. Hannah put Jesus first!
