Judgment is Coming
Jude 14-15
INTRODUCTION: These two verses assure us that the Lord Jesus is coming back to earth again, that He will be accompanied by His holy ones, the saints and angels and that He is coming execute judgment on the ungodly.
It seems today as though the ungodly are going unpunished, that they have the upper hand. We are tempted to say with the Psalmist, "Lord, how long shall the wicked triumph? How long shall they utter and speak hard things? And all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?" Then we are reminded of the sure promise of Jude 14-15 and Psalm 50:3, "our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.
Keep in mind that the prophecy in Jude 14-15 is not of the first coming of Christ but of His Second Coming. At His first coming He came in grace, John 3:17, "For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." When He comes the second time it will be to judge.
I. VS. 14 THE PROPHET
A. The scripture says: "Enoch… prophesied." Enoch was a man who loved God and lived for Him.
1. Enoch is known as a godly man.
2. From the genealogy in Genesis 5 we read of Enoch.
a. vs. 22, "And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years and begat sons and daughters."
b. Vs. 24, " And Enoch walked with God, and he was not; for God took Him.'
3. "Enoch… The seventh from Adam" identifies him as the godly Enoch, since others were named Enoch.
B. Hebrews 11:5 says that Enoch, "… had this testimony that he pleased God."
1. In Hebrews 11:6 with find that, "without faith it is impossible to please him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."
2. If you want to please God as Enoch did, then believe in God and believe what He says and do it.
a. Walk with God in faith.
b. Walk in the light of God's Word (Psalm 119:105, "Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet."
c. In the midst of the ungodliness of his time Enoch walked with God and lived a clean, godly life.
II. VS. 14, THE PROPHECY
A. Listen to the words of Enoch's prophecy: "Behold , the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints."
1. It is certain Jesus is coming back again.
2. He promised He would come again, John 14:3, "…I will come again and receive you unto myself." I Thess. 4:13-8.
3. After His return in the clouds, Jesus will come to the earth.
a. Acts 1:11, "Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven."
b. Jesus ascended up from the Mount of Olives and He will return to it (Zechariah 14:4).
B. When Christ returns to the earth He will do so with His Holy Ones.
1. The angels- Matthew 25:31, "When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him…"
2. The saints - "The Lord cometh with ten-thousands of his saints." The Greek word for saints is hagios meaning holy. Saints are made holy by the blood of Jesus.
a. Zechariah 14:5, "The Lord my God shall come and the saints with thee."
b. Then in Revelation 19:11-16, we have a wonderful picture of Christ's return to earth. The armies, which were in heaven, includes the saints who were raptured at the beginning of the tribulation.
III. VS. 15, THE PURPOSE
A. The purpose of Christ's second advent is to "execute judgment upon all."
1. Enoch saw the ungodliness of the antediluvian world, yet, he looked beyond that to the wickedness of the last days and speaks to all ungodly people.
2. Be assured that the ungodly will be judged by Christ (John 5:27-30).
B. "Upon All," this means this judgment will be for all the lost, all the ungodly.
1. The word "ungodly" is used four timed in this verse. There are immoral, drug abusing, murdering sinners.
2. "Just as the flood destroyed all who were outside the ark, and the fire and brimstone destroyed all in Sodom and Gomorrah except Lot and his wife and two daughters, so the last judgment will encompass all the ungodly." (Weirsbe, 154).
C. "To convince all that are ungodly…' The ungodly will be convicted, every knee shall bow.
1. The godless will meet God. They run their mouths in slander now but not then (vss. 8, 10, 16, 18).
2. They will be sentenced without appeal for they will have been before the supreme judge.
3. "The writer's emphasis on the terms all and ungodly is designed to call the attention of these godless men to the seriousness of their sin (Kistemaker, 397).
CONCLUSION: Sin is serious. God will not tolerate ungodliness. There is no peace in sin but there is peace in knowing Christ and walking with Him.
