The True Significance of Wedding Traditions
Part 5

  1. THE SPECIAL MEANING OF THE BRIDE'S VEIL

    1. The bride's veil represents modesty and respect.
      1. sents the sanctity of marriage.
        1. Marriage is holy
        2. Hebrews 13:4
      2. The veil also represents the exclusiveness of the marriage covenant.
        1. The veil says that all others are excluded.
The veil says the bride and groom have limited themselves to each other.
        2. They have shut out all others as far as marriage is concerned.

    2. The veil reminds the couple and the witnesses that the physical relationship is only to be entered into after the vows are completed.

    3. The veil is also significant in its relationship to salvation.
      1. When Christ fulfilled the conditions of our redemption the temple veil was rent, taken away (Matthew 27:50-51).
      2. When an unbeliever receives Jesus Christ as his Saviour, 'the veil between him and Christ is taken away (II Corinthians 3:14).

  2. WHY THE COUPLE IS PRONOUNCED MAN AND WIFE

    1. The pronouncement of husband and wife establishes a definite point in time for the beginning of the marriage.

    2. The words, "I now pronounce you man and wife," remove any future doubt in the minds of the couple or the witnesses about the validity of the marriage.

    3. The establishing of a point in time is also important to salvation.
      1. When we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in our heart that God has raised Him from the dead we are united with Christ in salvation (Romans 10:9-13).
      2. Public baptism by the authority of the Church gives official pronouncement that we are save (John 1:12; Acts 2:41).

  3. THE PURPOSE IN INTRODUCING THE NEW COUPLE

    1. The introduction of the couple establishes their change of names.
"I now present to you Mr. and Mrs. Fayard."
      1. In marriage, the wife takes on the name of the husband.
      2. In marriage, the man becomes known as the husband of the wife.

    2. The change of name is illustrated in Genesis 17:4-5.
