The True Significance of Wedding Traditions
Part 6

  1. WHY THE COUPLE SIGNS THE WEDDING PAPER OR CERTIFICATE?

    1. The couple signs the wedding papers to establish a public document.
      1. Filed in the courthouse.
      2. Says this couple is legally married.

    2. It is a record that a covenant has been entered into.
      1. The couple by signing, signify they have entered into a covenant of marriage.
      2. "Till death do us part" (Matthew 19:6; Mark 10:9).

  2. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE GUEST BOOK

    1. The guests become the official witnesses to the wedding covenant.

    2. By signing their names, they are says, "I have witnessed the vows and I will testify to the reality of this marriage."

    3. The witnesses can also serve as God's reminders to the couple to be faithful to their wedding vows.
      1. Jesus approves of marriage.
      2. Jesus attended and also called His disciples to the wedding in Cana of Galilee (John 2:1-2).

  3. THE PURPOSE OF THE RECEIVING LINE

    1. The guests give their blessing to the couple and their parents in the receiving line.

    2. When Boaz entered into the covenant with Ruth to marry her, all the people that were in the gate and the elders witnessed and gave their blessing (Ruth 4:11-15).

  4. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RING

    1. In scripture, the ring signifies authority and the resources that go with it (Esther 8:2).

    2. In a covenant relationship, marriage is a covenant. The ring signifies identification (Luke 15:22-24).

    3. When God made a covenant with Noah, He put a symbol in the sky -- a rainbow. When viewed from the sky, the rainbow is a circle. It was to be a continual reminder to God of the covenant that He had made (Genesis 9:8-17).
      1. God combined Abram's name with the promise represented in His name to form the new name Abraham.
      2. Abraham is known as "the father of multitude" and Jehovah is known as "the God of Abraham.

    4. Marriage is a covenant and the name change represents the promise of fidelity in marriage.
