The True Significance of Wedding Traditions
Part 3

  1. The Jewish Wedding and How It Relates to Redemption and the church.

    1. After the period of separation (see last weeks lesson), the groom returns to the house of the bride.
      1. After the period of separation, the groom, best man and escorts leave the house of the groom's father.
        1. The groom and others usually make this torch light procession to the bride's house at night.
        2. Jesus will come from His Father's house, heaven, accompanied by an angelic host (John 14:3; I Thessalonians 4:16).

    2. The bride expects the bridegroom to come.
      1. The bride was expecting the bridegroom to come for her.
        1. She did not know the exact time.
        2. Because the bride did not know the exact hour that her groom would come for her, his arrival was proceeded by a shout.
      2. The return of Christ, the groom, will be preceded by a shout (I Thessalonians 4:16).
        1. The bride expects the return of Christ (II Timothy 4:8).
        2. The bride does not know the day nor the hour (Matthew 24, 42, 44).

  2. The True Meaning of Wedding Traditions.

    1. Why the father walks the bride down the aisle.
      1. As the father walks the bride down the aisle, he is signifying two things.
        1. By this action, the Father says, "I endorse this young man as God's very best choice of a husband for you, and I am now bringing you to him."
        2. The father is saying to the young man, "I present to you a daughter whom I have earnestly endeavored to train up as a pure bride."
      2. In the Bible the father is responsible for the purity of the daughter before marriage (Deuteronomy 22:13-21; II Corinthians 11:2).

    2. The real significance of the white wedding dress.
      1. The white wedding gown symbolizes purity of heart and life.
      2. After the marriage, the husband is responsible for the purity of heart and life of the bride.
        1. He is to cleanse her by the Word of God, just as Christ purifies believers by the Word of God.
        2. Ephesians 5:25-28.
